Food production and distribution is an ever important topic for sustainability, and impacts all aspects of the food chain. The complexity of the food system is vulnerable to disruption and isn’t sustainable in the long haul. This is why digitalization, as part of Food Systems 4.0 , helps to promote food system sustainability.
Food Systems 4.0 is the digitalization process taking place across the food supply chain – in support of sustainable food systems. Digitalization of the food system is necessary to drive the transition towards sustainability and is being implemented in all phases of the supply chain.
According to a recent publication from the FAO, “The food sector can harness digital tools ranging from e-commerce and mobile technologies for increasing access to markets, to the use of artificial intelligence for improved pest control and crop genetics, as well as tools allowing optimized management of natural resources and early warning of food-security threats. It will facilitate a holistic approach, bringing the economic, social and environmental dimensions together to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.”
The challenge with Digitalization
The unique challenge with the fast move towards digitalization of the food chain is the pace at which technologies are being developed for any specific problem that they solve. Integration of data collected with digitalization is at the crux of improving the entire system, and relies heavily on digital technologies like IoT sensors and AI data analysis for improvement.
The SFNV takes an approach to Food Systems 4.0 by approaching digitalization from the following aspects:
- Food safety
- Food security
- Logistics & transportation
- Supply chain transparency & traceability
- Production & storage, and waste reduction
- Flavor and nutritional development
We partnered with Swiss Food & Nutrition Valley to support the Food Systems 4.0 transition, by enabling insights into food quality and safety based on cooling optimization. The Axino solution helps improve food quality and freshness while minimizing food waste. The plug & play sensors are easy to install, and collect Core Temperature within minutes, and the data can be integrated with existing management systems to support cooling decisions for food quality improvement.
This approach to data is fully scalable, which is necessary in driving the transition for sustainable food systems.
